What To Wear To A Massage: A Straight Answer

Almost everyone wonders about this before their first massage. Almost nobody asks. So here is the practical version, without the hedging.

You undress to your comfort level, and that is literal

For most massages you will be asked to undress to your underwear, then you get under a towel or sheet and the therapist works around it. Only the area being treated is uncovered, and it is covered again before the next one.

If you would rather keep more on, keep more on. Gym shorts, a vest, whatever you feel relaxed in. A tense client gets less out of a session than a comfortable one, so your comfort is not a courtesy to the therapist, it is part of the treatment working.

We also offer treatments designed to be done fully clothed, for anyone who prefers not to undress at all.

What if you forgot to shave, or you are self-conscious?

Nothing happens. The therapist has seen every kind of body, in every condition, thousands of times over. Hair, scars, moles, a tattoo you regret, the fact that you did not shave your legs, none of it registers. It is not a compliment or a reassurance, it is simply the job.

The same goes for being nervous, talking too much, falling asleep, or your stomach making noise. All normal, all unremarkable.

What actually matters on the day

Do not arrive straight from the beach covered in sunscreen and salt. A quick rinse is genuinely useful, and it protects the products and towels. It takes two minutes and it is the one preparation that makes a real difference.

Eat something light beforehand. Not a large meal, and not nothing either. Massage on an empty stomach can leave you light-headed, especially in the heat.

Avoid alcohol before the session. It changes how you register pressure, which means you can end up sorer than you intended.

Arrive ten minutes early. Rushing in and immediately lying down means spending the first fifteen minutes of your treatment arriving.

The things people worry about that do not matter

Jewellery can stay on, though removing a necklace or a watch is more comfortable. Nails, makeup and hair need no preparation.

You do not need to know which treatment you want. You do not need to know the names of the muscles. You do not need to be fit, flexible or a regular. And you are allowed to change your mind about pressure halfway through, out loud, as many times as you like.

On the day, at our place

We provide everything: towels, robes, shower facilities and a quiet room to sit afterwards. What you bring is essentially just yourself, a little early, having rinsed off.

If it is your first massage, or your first with us, say so when you book. We will spend more time at the start explaining what will happen, and we will check in during the session rather than assuming.
